Auditions - One Act Plays -,Witches of Prestwick

THE BEAR

By Anton Chekhov, directed by Rolande Burrows

A ‘battle of the sexes' One-Act play with action taking place in a landowner’s country house outside Moscow, around 1900.

This furious but light-hearted piece provides three great parts that are challenging, rewarding and amusing.  A firecracker of a short play with three excellent characters.

Could you handle falling in love?

The male lead is brash, bold and masterful… an old-school Russian landowner who is swept off his feet by a strong, determined, reserved, wildcat - his equal - a landowning widow sworn to live alone - until…

A cast of three - age range is 35-65.

The male lead, Krasnov, is a country estate-owner aged 35-50’ish. He could be up to ten years older or younger than Popova.

The female lead, Popova is recently widowed, has staff, horses and a comfortable lifestyle.  Aged 35-50’ish. Popova is confident, seductive... but cold and distant at first. She is very polite - a country lady…  until, not always so politely, the sparks eventually fly between her and Krasnov.

Olga is Popova’s companion/housekeeper, who cannot always hold her tongue. Needn’t be, but if older, she is still quite active.

Equality was an issue even in 1900, but is handled by Chekhov with a spirited sense of humour…. not at all in his usual style.

Read-Through: Sunday 4th August at 2.30.

Auditions: Wednesday 7th August at 7.30 and Sunday 18th August at 2.30

THE WITCHES OF PRESTWICK

By Joe Graham, Directed by Jane Branch

A light-hearted, raunchy one-act play.

Three members of a local amateur dramatic society are rehearsing their roles as the witches in the ‘Scottish play’, with varying levels of competence.  Bev has taken her tole a bit too seriously, researching witchcraft to lend plausibility to her performance.  Goaded on by the other two, Jan and Lois, she gives them a crash course in magic with some unexpected results!

A cast of four - age range is 20 - 60

Lois: The youngest, around 20 years.  Slightly naïve.  Thinks her boyfriend is perfect…Well almost

Bev: More mature, around 30 to 40 years.  Unmarried – waiting for the right man. Researching witchcraft and taking it seriously.

Jan: The eldest, around 50 to 60.  On her third husband, but ready for more!

Devil Man: Age indeterminate.  A forthright salesman with a sexy voice.  He will have to be happy to cope with several funny sexual inuendoes and three actresses!

The play follows Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a physicist, through their romantic relationship. Marianne often waxes poetic about cosmology, quantum mechanics, string theory and the belief that there are multiple universes that pull people's lives in various directions. This is reflected in the play's structure as brief scenes are repeated, often with different outcomes.

AUDITION - Nothing Like Brief Encounter

NOTHING LIKE BRIEF ENCOUNTER AUDITION NOTICE

A Comedy written and directed by Laraine Ferguson

The read-through was very well received and laughter abounded, and the Wednesday audition was well attended.  Unfortunately, a few people who had been cast found they had commitments, and are unable to take part, so we are holding another audition on Saturday 23rd March at 2.30

Set on Teignmouth Station, the would-be travellers keep themselves and others entertained by attempting to put on a play, bursting into song, spoons are played and romance blossoms. If only things like that really happened on the platforms.

The characters needed are:

Carol and Barry – This couple should be of similar ages from mid-20s to late 40s.  Barry needs to interact with the audience.  An ideal role for a stand-up comedian. Both should be able to sing.

Doris or Vera – Someone has been cast as one half of this comical duo, but the final decision about who plays which role, will be decided once cast.  Doris and Vera are friends of a mature age.  Conversations start out simple enough, but then become muddled leading to hilarious confusion. Either role could be played by a man.

Ruth – Aged between 45 to 65, Ruth is part of AmDram group. She is shy to begin with.

Helen – Another member of the AmDram group. Crusty, bossy and interfering, but means well.

Laraine’s other two plays, The Lone Ranger and Not Quite The 39 Steps, were both well received and played to full houses.  This play is just as funny, and definitely worth considering being part of.

Production dates are 30th May to 1st June then 5th to 8th June.

For more information, or to express an interest, please either email hello@teignmouthplayers.com, Instagram @teignmouth_players, call and leave a message on (01626) 778991 or pop in a Thursday morning when the Ice Factory is open.

Second Audition - Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett

So, what's it about then?

Terry Pratchett takes Shakespeare's Macbeth
and then turns it up 'til the knob comes off!

It's all there - a wicked Duke and Duchess, the ghost of the murdered King, dim soldiers, strolling players, a land in peril. And who stands between the Kingdom and destruction? Three witches. Granny Weatherwax (intolerant, self-opinionated, powerful), Nanny Ogg (down-to-earth, vulgar) and Magrat Garlick (naïve, fond of occult jewellery and bunnies).

Gytha ‘Nanny’ Ogg

Likes a tipple and a broad sense of humour. Also a witch.

Magrat Garlick
[F] The youngest of the witches, Magrat has a bit of the ‘New Age’ witch to her.

The Fool
[M but could be F as principal boy, 20s to early 30s] reluctant jester,
he is intelligent and meant for greater things.

 Leonel Felmet
[M] Duke, then King of Lancre. Cruel and power-hungry, in a mad way.
He gets progressively madder and crueller.

Lady Felmet
[F] Leonel’s wife. Calculating, power-hungry, cruel.

Tomjon
[M - could be F as principal boy 20s to early30s] a much admired,
extremely talented youngish actor. Vitoller’s son.

 Hwel

He is kind, loyal to the Vitollers, and keeps a caring eye on Tomjon.

 Verence
[M] an elderly ghost, late King of Lancre. He was cruel and power-hungry,
but in a regal, kingly way. Now he’s annoyed, and has a score to settle.

 Vitoller

who agrees to raise an abandoned baby as his own.

Mrs. Vitoller
[F] Vitoller’s kind and caring wife.

Sergeant and Guards
[M/F] bumbling, with a strong sense of self-importance.

Demon

Assorted

84 Charing Cross Road - Audition

The cast has 4 women and 3 men:

  • Helene - Early thirties to mid fifties.

  • Frank Doel - forty to sixty

  • Megan (English) / Maxine (American actress). This character should really have an American accent though it is not compulsory.

  • Mrs. Joan Todd can be any age

  • Cecilly Farr mid-twenties / mid-thirties.

  • Mr. Martin says very little and can be any age.

  • Bill can be thirties or forties

  • Alvin can double with another part.

  • Pilot is a voice-over

84 CHARING CROSS ROAD

This wonderful show is a dramatisation of business letters between a young struggling writer in New York and an antiquarian book store in London.

In a sense, these are also love letters.
They are about the love of good literature.

The play takes place over a twenty year period, beginning in1949 when Helene Hanff first writes Marks & Co. and ends in 1969 with the death of Frank Doel, the delightfully dusty supplier of so many old volumes to Helen who has shown her gratitude through the years by sending ‘care packages’ to the staff of Marks & Co.
